Introducing The Data Visualisation Catalogue: Power BI Edition

For quite a while, I’ve wanted to get back to basics in Power BI. I’ve “grown up” as a data professional in this tool. Much of the practical application of data visualization I’ve learned has been in this tool. And as much as I think I’ve found the strengths and weaknesses of Power BI as a viz tool, I’ve always wondered if it would be possible to create every chart type in the Data Visualisation Catalogue in Power BI.

With all of the conversation around “Is AI taking over BI and data viz?” and “Is Power BI dead?”, creating all of these chart types in Power BI seemed counter intuitive. Until I realized that no matter what direction AI takes us or what cool stuff AI can produce, it still needs to be guided be someone who knows the organization, the audience, and the intended data story to produce to impactful insights.

So I’m embarking on the journey to work my way through the catalogue to create every chart type in the tool that I’m most comfortable with. To solidify my understanding of each chart type, when/why/how to communicate with each one, how to work with a star schema for each type, and produce the right calculations for each chart. And it’ll be a ton of fun to document all of the little details that I like to nerd out on!

I’m inviting you along with journey with me on YouTube!
